Bernice Barry

Originally from the wild and craggy Atlantic coast of Cornwall in the UK, Bernice relocated to Australia’s far southwest coast near Wooditjup (Margaret River) in 2001, after two landlocked decades living in England’s midlands. She has spent the last twenty years creating a native garden in a forest near the Indian Ocean. In 2011, she closed the door on a career in international curriculum innovation, as an adviser on the teaching of literacy, to focus on her lifelong interest in writing, literature and history.

Bernice has a BA in English, French and Spanish, an Advanced Diploma in the teaching of reading, a MA in Education, and has written many publications on education, from language development software for young children and articles on teaching with multimodal texts to new national curricula for students and student teachers.

In 2012, her first short story (‘Mornings Like This’) won the inaugural Regional Writers’ award in the Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival short story competition (‘Things that are Found in Trees and other stories’: Margaret River Press ISBN 978 0 9872180 3 2) In March 2015, after eleven years of research, her biography of botanist and local settler Georgiana Molloy was self-published in Western Australia. From March 2016 the book was published by Picador (Pan Macmillan) in Australia and New Zealand: ‘Georgiana Molloy: the Mind that Shines’. It was released worldwide as an eBook in 2019.
